The Devil We Know

"Witches don't even believe in the Devil!"

Oh, dear.

I'm going to have to stop you right there.

I recognize that this claim is often made when certain groups are accused of devil worship, and I also recognize how frightening it can be to be faced with that accusation, considering the history and the fact that Devil worship isn't exactly an accepted practice, even by those within certain occult circles. But the fact remains that what they're saying isn't true. They're propagating a lie, as well as throwing an entire sect of witches under the bus.

There are many who make that claim and wholeheartedly believe it, which is astounding. And not only do they truly believe that the Devil never has, never will, and never could have anything to do with witches, but they often expound on their original claim by saying that the Devil is a Christian construct (not strictly true and heavily debated) and that witches don't subscribe to Christianity (again, not strictly true), so therefore witches don't even believe in the Devil (super not true; that's not how that works). It's a fallacy based on other fallacies, some of which are based on lies, myths, misconceptions, and even mistranslations.

There are even some who go so far as to uphold the idea that the Devil is the embodiment of genuine evil, which is funny considering that the people saying this are often the ones who claim that they aren't beholden to Christian ideology.

And to be clear, I do think that the majority of people who make the claim that "witches don't believe in the Devil" are just repeating things from books that were written by people in certain schools of witchcraft that are a little biased. Or, in some cases, they are repeating things said on TV shows and movies. I don't necessarily think that they are saying it because they are trying to assert themselves as having a superior set of morals, but rather because of an ignorance that is continuously propagated. It's an ignorance that leads to more and more people, including other witches, saying, "Witches don't believe in the Devil!"

A more accurate claim would be not all witches worship/work with/believe in the Devil. But that's not what they say. They say that witches don't believe in the Devil.

And that is simply not true.

I don't really want to address this notion ever again, and so all I'm going to say in response is: yes, they do. Lots of them do. Lots of them have. Lots of them will. In his many forms and by his many names, witches all over the world, worship and/or believe in the Devil.

And that's all there is to it.

Now, you are free and able to hate this. You can think it's morally wrong until the day you die, and if you really want to waste your time, you can even email me about it. Contact link is in the header; I will not read it, but you are welcome to send it anyway.

So if you identify as a witch who does not worship or work with the Devil, believe in the concept of the Devil, or even if you don't believe in any such entities, deity or otherwise, please, be respectful. Educate yourself, and don't let yourself get caught up in some of the lies that circulate in the world of magick.

Because at the end of the day, we are all practicing magick, something that often earns us a good deal of mocking and misunderstanding. So throwing any one of us under the bus because you don't share our personal beliefs; it's really not a good look.
