Taking steps to prepare your child for school year ahead is an excellent way to help your child succeed in the classroom. Many research studies have shown that kids from higher-income families test at least two to three years ahead of their classmates in reading. However, reading ahead of grade level might not always be a good thing. Some research suggests that ahead-of-grade-level reading could cause a student to lose pleasure in reading. To prevent this from happening, consider the following tips.

First, make sure your child has an ample amount of time to study. Most children need at least six hours of extra study per week to catch up in reading and math. Spending an extra hour a day in the library or on a computer may not be enough for some students. If you have the opportunity, set aside some time to read aloud to your child. It may even help a little bit to read a chapter or two each day.
