Chinese deity gaurdians protect the lives of people from harm. They are often depicted wearing imperial headdress and holding a ceremonial tablet. According to legend, Mazu was born around 960 AD to a prosperous family on Meizhou Island in Fujian Province. She was a talented swimmer and saved the lives of many seafarers. However, a legend claims that she was sacrificed at the young age of 28.
