Huangdi

Huangdi, or the Yellow Emperor, is a legendary emperor of ancient China. According to legend, he ruled in the years 2697-2698 BC. He is also a patron saint of Daoism.

Guan Yu

The first known depiction of Guan Yu dates from the Sui dynasty (581-618 ce). Today, he is revered as a bodhisattva in Buddhist tradition and as a guardian deity in Chinese folk religion. He is also held in high esteem in Confucianism.

In the 20th century, Guan Yu was worshipped by the president of China and the warlord Yuan Shikai. He was also worshipped by the short-lived emperor of China. However, these were just three of the notable figures who sought the deity’s help.

Guan Yu is often portrayed as a giant with a distinctive appearance. According to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he was nine chi tall and had a beard of two chi. His face was crimson like a mature date. His image has become popular in Chinese folk religion and also as the model for male leads in Beijing opera. His figure inspired many statues that depict him.

Guan Yu is a mighty warrior who believes in justice and virtue. His noble posture and courteous manners earned him many admirers from each kingdom. He is often referred to as the “God of War/Army God.” However, Guan Yu is also known as the “Greater Brother” because of his exemplary character.
